String Piecing the Wonder Cut Ruler Way!

Looking for a way to clean out that "ever growing" scrap box?  Give this one a try.  The most important part to remember is that the "initial" strips are cut with a regular ruler.  The blocks are then cut with the Wonder Cut Ruler.  This is a fun project even a beginning quilter can tackle.

Here we go!  String Piecing the Wonder Cut Ruler way!  Again, lots of pictures, so be patient while they load.

For these instructions, I will be using purple fabrics left over from a previous project -- in other words, I didn't want to sort through my scrap box and sort out all the purple tones.  The sample shown makes 5-1/2" unfinished squares.  This makes into a fun scrappy quilt.  Enjoy!

1)  Begin by selecting four fabrics (2 dark and 2 light).  Cut 1 strip from each selected fabric 2-1/2" wide (regular 2-1/2" NOT Wonder Cut Ruler 2-1/2") by width of fabric.  Select one light strip and one dark strip.  Place them right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam down the length of your fabric strip.  Press seam allowance to the darker fabric.  Repeat with the remaining two strips.  Again, press the seam allowance to the darker fabric.

2)  Place first strip right sides up on your cutting mat with the dark fabric on top.  Place second strip on top of the first strip, right sides together with the lighter strip on top.  With your finger, you should be able to feel the seam allowances "zip" into place.  Sew a 1/4" seam down both long sides of fabric strips creating a fabric tube.  (Sound familiar?)

3) Align the 5-1/2" diagonal line of the Wonder Cut Ruler along the bottom edge of your fabric.  Cut one side.

4) Cut the other side.  Continue cutting your 4 part string squares down the length of your strip turning the strip over after every cut.  Press your seams to the dark fabric.

5) Assemble your squares together as shown.  Press seams to one side.  This makes 1/2 of a block.

6) Assemble these two "halves" together to make your completed block. Press seams to one side.

There you have it!  String Piecing the Wonder Cut Ruler way!  Now, wasn't that easy!!
