Just what is a "Virtual
Quilt Retreat". Well, to be honest, we are not quite sure, but we
are going to give it a whirl. The whole idea came about from
members of our Wonder Cut Ruler Yahoo List. Having never done a "virtual" quilt retreat, this will
be a first.
The General Idea
We will post fabric requirements for a quilt. Decide on a
time-frame and take it from there. At our real retreats, quilters
get to know one another by a series of introductions. We ask
participants to tell us something unique about themselves. After
the introductions are complete, the quilting begins. We will
follow the same general game plan here. So, with that, here we
go!
Supplies
You will need the following:
Rotary Cutter & Mat
Wonder Cut Ruler
Fabric - requirements will be posted soon
Introductions
Deb Hopkins - Idaho - In
addition to being a quilter for over 20 years, I have
a passion for cemeteries and headstones. I spend hours
photographing headstones and posting them on-line. Click
here to see my cemetery surveys.
Alice Walter - Idaho - I was
hoping mom would hint at what she wanted to say here, but she hasn't,
so here we go with one thing that I think is unique about my mom.
She has been known to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.
Yeppers, my mom was a skydiver.
So, now you know something unique about us. It's your turn to
tell us something unique about you!
Debby L. - Indiana - I am
a retired psych nurse. Retired when I turned 40. That was
<mumble, eleven, mumble> years ago. I LOVE
using the WCR and have been introducing it to my guild and friends here
in SC. I am a transplanted northerner. Indiana. We
are DINKS - duel income no kids. No, really we are OINKS - one
income no kids. I longarm quilt now and love it.
Pam A. - Greater Kansas City -
I made my first quilt as a high school home ec project (http://tinyurl.com/4b9nb). I
then had a long dry spell, and now I'm just getting back into
quilting. I think I have 5 or 6 quilts of various sizes in
various states of completion, included the second quilt I started back
in 1989.
Susie - New York - I'm sure
there is nothing unique about me but I'll sure a little
introduction. My name is Susie and I have lived in northern New
Yark all my life. I'm 49 and love it. I'm one of nine
siblings and a twin. I've been married 31 years (this might be
unique) :o) and have two sons ages 21 and 24 and a grandson 2. I
love walking outside in the spring, summer and fall but NOT in the
winter so I quilt a lot then. I'm a pretty new quilter of just
one year. I also love to read, bake and enjoy climbing a mountain
once in a while. We live close to the Adirondack Mounts. I
'was' a stay at home Mom all those years and the boys moved out a few
years ago. I work "VERY" part time now at a local beauty/tanning
shop. That's about it.

Carol M - I am a long term
sewer (pronounced with the long o sound) so I love the piecing
process. In order to finish the multitude of quilt tops I have a
short-arm quilting machine. I also do machine embroidery. I
am a director of technology for a college, a pastor's wife, retired
military wife, the neighborhood computer repair guru and this semester
I squeezed in teaching a couple of night classes. I collect
fabric and get great enjoyment petting my collection.
Gail M - Massachusetts - I've
been quilting for 4 years and have now branched out to machine
embroidery. I am a certified pet dog trainer and have been
involved in positive dog training for 13 years. Besides that I
love to read and work out. I volunteer with my dog Jake to visit
the Alzheimer's Day Care plus the nursing home where my mom
resides.
Pat C - Central Utah Mountains -
While my dear Granny tried to teach me
quilting 60 years ago life got to busy so I never made a quilt until I
retired. Quilting is now my all consuming passion and I can't get
enough of it. I guess what is unique about me is the number of
"children" I have. Seven Miniature Pinchers, 5 cats, 4 geese, 2 turkeys
(no they are pets and have names - NOT dinner!), 2 ducks, 32 chickens(
while only a few have names they are not dinner either) and 1
husband. I am currently Chief Head Flunky of our quilt guild.
Judy G - Boston Area - I
love applique and hand-sewing! Most quilters shy away from
this! But I can't sit without doing something. Love English
paper piecing, buttonhole applique and needleturn applique.
Maria - Canada - I'm a former
elementary school teacher, mother of four and delighted grandmother
of 1 and 7/9. (My youngest will give us a second grandchild in 2
months.) I started quilting in 1985 after watching one of the first
quilting shows on TV in our area - Georgia Bonesteel's Lap Quilting.
Three years ago, I suddenly realized that a lot of my husband's
drawings, doodling, and paintings would make interesting quilt
patterns, so I started designing them, learned some html, created a web
site (have just begun creating sites for others as well) and used our
names to start Maria Michaels Designs. (
www.mariamichaelsdesigns.com
) I am looking forward to this retreat and to learning more about using
my great Wonder Cut Ruler. Many thanks and my appreciation to Deb and
Alice!
Margaret (mgt) - NE IN - I have
been seriously quilting for 3 years, sewed and machine embroidered
before. My love is making fat quarter quilts using strip piecing. I
only make quilts that are less the 60"x60" because that is the size of
batting I have. I hope the quilt that we will be making will have sizes
because I only make small quilt. 98% of my quilts are made for Project
Linus. I am active in our local chapter. I try and make at least 2
small quilts a month. I am 66 years old and live with my older brother
who is an old Polio and is going downhill physically. So I am spending
more time at home quilting. I do have my quilts, quilted by a Longarm
Quilter. I am one of those rare quilters who does not have a stash or
UFO's. I never have more than 2 things going at a time, but most of the
time I start something and finish it before going on to the next. I am
looking forward to using my WCR and this class. mgt
Josie -
Eastern Iowa - very rural community..I am a retired teacher
and took up quilting then ,,I have always had a high interest in it as
sewing clothing was a definite love of mine ,,switch over to quilting
and I am hooked , it is a definite passion with me,,scrappy quilts
being my favorite.plus I am an avid fan of mystery quilts..What is
unique about me...hmmm. could be I have super sense of humor the
majority of the time..or maybe because I have been married to same man
for 45 1/2 years, we were blessed with 5 children, we lost a son quite
young,,the other four are married and in turn have blessed me with a
dozen gr kids..I have 6 boys and 6 girls so that is unique too..They
also keep me hopping making quilts.
I love to quilt ,,crochet, bake,
garden and read and look so forward to our first virtual retreat and
getting to know all of you better...and a big thanks to Deb and Alice
for agreeing to do this...I sure hope we make it a very happy
experience.
Bettina - I am a self taught quilter. Made several large quilts while living in Bavaria, figured I better take a class & learn what I may be doing wrong. (several things....) We're sort of "oinks", I only work part time, in a quilt shop no less, just to get a discount....help a friend in her office just cuz she's my friend, plus I get a little more $$ for quilting. My husband has a golf pro shop & we've been married just over 2 yrs. We have 2 cats & 1 cockatoo that has (gasp!) beaked a few quilts in her day. I love brights & love tribal stuff, having traveled to South Africa a few yrs ago.
Linda T - Chubbock, ID - I
am fairly new to quilting, but not to sewing. My grandmother made
sure I could sew - starting with doll clothes on her old Singer (how I
wish I had that machine but my mom and aunties saw no use in keeping
it). I have made quilts, so far, for camping - so very basic
flannel 9 patch, and a couple of raggedy ones for my sons last
Christmas. I have done applique for clothing and other home dec
and would like to try a quilt with applique someday, for now the day to
day work of a job keeps me from delving that deep.
I live in Chubbuck, Idaho but was born and raised in Burley. I
haven't got my own ruler yet - told my son that is my Christmas wish -
but have a borrowed one for this project. He is working in Burley
a lot these days so maybe he will get me one there since he says there
is no real shopping there - but what does a young guy know.
Linda B - Rexburg, ID - Lived here all my life except for a
couple of short stays in California and Montana. I've been
quilting professionally for over 30 years. I make custom quilts,
hand quilt them, and love piecing and designing. I teach,
including WonderCut Ruler classes, and love traveling, teaching, and
meeting new quilting friends. I have waaaayy too many tops that
aren't quilted and don't know if I have time in this lifetime to get
them all done. I've been married to Morgan for 40 years (!!) and
have 4 sons and one daughter, all married, and 15 grandchildren.
DD is also a hand quilter, but doesn't do any piecing yet. I love
retreats and will definitely be joining in this one!
Carol - My
Name is Carol and there isn't too much unique about me. I have a
wonderful husband of 38 years & 2 sons & 2 grandsons, that
keep me going. I'm 63 years old & have always worked very hard all
my life. I have lived in the country all my life worked on a farm &
was a custodian at our high school. I had to retire last year do to a
back injury & failed back surgery. This has left me disabled &
unable to do much of anything. I have always loved quilts but never had
the time to learn how to make them. I just bought my Wonder cut ruler
last week & love it. I made my first table runner & it is not
half bad for a beginner. Quilting will be my therapy &
it will keep my mind off of the pain I am in. Who knows
I might get real good at quilting, I would love to make some quilts for
friends & my family. I would love to try & make a quilt
with all of you, I think it would be lots of fun I'm so thankful
for finding the web site on the Wonder Cut Ruler I think it will open a
whole new part in my life. Thank you & Happy Quilting!
Lynn L - Oregon -I
am 41 and very new to quilting. I have an almost 13 year old daughter,
5 miniature schnauzers and a wonderful husband of almost 2 years (I was
previously widowed) I am a veritable hermit (but I did manage to find
that himmit:) and am unique (I think) in that I am 100% ordinary.
Esther - I love the idea of a
retreat so will attempt it. A little about myself. I'm
about the oldest of the group so far. Will be 75 next year, been
actively quilting since early '81, retired RN and enjoying every minute
of it. Widow (almost 2 years) mother of 7, grandmother of 23, GGM
of 5. I do mostly machine piecing, some applique, some hand
quilting, machine quilting mostly, also machine embroidery.
Looking forward to learning to use my ruler.
Bev - Oregon - I've been quilting for almost 20 years, do pattern testing for an Oregon quilt designer, and am part owner of a longarm machine that I use to quilt my own quilts. I work full time as a secretary for a publishing company. I have used the WCR for various projects, but never to make a complete quilt so really looking forward to this retreat. I am married to a very understanding husband, and mother of 3 grown daughters.
Retta - from the Blue Roof/Plywood State - (okay, Retta, I give. What is the Blue Roof/Plywood State?? - Deb) Unique?? Dad always said thank goodness there's only one of you girl !~! I agree. Have been at this quilting fun for 35 years and the first attempt was horrid. Oh yes, I still see it because sweetie daughter will not stop using it. The things I have learned over the years: #1 buy a cutter and mat dear lady. #2 Do not attempt to make a super king for your first "real" quilt with a cardboard template and scissors rofl But that quilt is still the best sewn and my favorite. Am still using the original sewing machine. Some things move forward, some just keep on working. Thanks for trying something new ladies. We're going to have fun whoohoooooo Hugs Retta from the Blue Roof/Plywood State
Here is Retta's answer to my Blue Roof/Plywood State question - Deb, since we've had so many hurricanes all the rooves are blue plastic and the windows are boarded up with plywood here in Florida. lol And thank you for the great time and good instructions this last summer in Bend. Nice putting faces with names. Hugs Retta NW Florida who escaped majorly damage and has no blue roof or plywood windows, whoohoooooo
Mari - Texas - I am a Family & Consumer Science teacher/Business Technology teacher. I find this an interesting concept and would like to try it. I am not good at completing projects but love starting them. I have not wanted to pack up my supplies to attend a "real" retreat, so the virtual retreat sounds like a good idea. I am anxious to see the instructions. I have had the Wonder Cut Ruler for some time, but never completed a project with it. I have been married for 40 years, have 2 married children and 5 grandchildren.
Nancy -
Northern Indiana - I'm
ordering my ruler today. I've been married to my dh for 18 years,
have
2 dd's, in high school, freshman and senior. I returned to work
1.5
years ago, to help pay for college educations and that has slowed my
quilting considerably. I'm a beginner, with 3 completed quilts
and 2
quilt tops on my resume. I love the idea of a
retreat, but have
neither the extra money or desire to leave my family on a weekend to
participate in a real one, so I'm looking forward to our virtual
retreat. Thanks ladies for agreeing to this.
Trice - New Braunfels, TX - I never made a single
quilt until I found the WCR one day on line and thought, that looks
easy, I think I could do that. Needless to say, I'm hooked now on
quilting. I am a National Sales Manager for Institutional Sales for a
company that manufacturers commercial grade security door hardware and
exit devices. I am a member of the Door and Hardware Institute and know
lots more about how to properly hang a door than I do about how to bind
a quilt. My family (mainly my sister) is still in shock that I even sit
down at a sewing machine because I was born without the sewing "gene".
Somehow or another it has been injected in my DNA through the WCR!!!
Perry D - Oklahoma City, OK - I am a widow,
have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I am a 4th generation Texan from
Houston who transplanted herself and her Mother to Oklahoma City 3
years ago after my husband passed away because all of my children live
here. I have been quilting for about 5 years and really enjoy it. I
also work full time, but am hoping to retire in about 2 years. I enjoy
using the wondercut ruler, it certainly has saved me a lot of time. I
have lots of ufo's, so am looking forward to doing another, lol.
Here is a link to my website if you want to see my "quilt output"
http://www.picturetrail.com/pdauzat
Nadine - California - I own a vendering business called Nadine's
Dream Castle Quiltworks, I just recently began selling the WCR (Wonder
Cut Ruler) They have been selling like hotcakes! I have a website
in the works that shows my patterns and some hand quilting supplies, I
sell. (click here) to
see my website which is a UFO.. I have been a quilter for at
least 30 years and most of my earlier works are hopefully still being
enjoyed by friends and relatives. Currently I am specializing in
original wall hanging and baby quilt KITS and Patterns. We also
manufacture a hand quilting frame along with my in-laws that also have
a quilting business.
Becky - Dubai - I'm really
originally from Illinois, and most recently from North
Carolina but now live most of the time in Dubai where I am exposed to
wonderful international quilters. I have been quilting I think 15
years, sporadically, now every chance I get. My grandmother gave
me
the quilting bug. She had made a lovely quilt for all 12 of her
grandchildren from double knit, back when it was all the
rage.........someone had given her a big bag full of scraps. Mine
is a
treasure, poorly constructed......but a treasure, my grandmother was
dying of breast cancer when she made it. She cut and sewed the
blocks
and my grandfather pressed them, the batting is an old blanket and the
backing is an old sheet, the blocks are simple four inch in beige,
white and turquoise. That quilt means so much to me, I only hope
that
the simple things I make mean as much to my children and grandchildren.
Marian - Texas - I have been seriously quilting for about three years. I am a tranplant from No. California and loving every minute of living here in Texas.
Irice - I've never done a retreat of any kind, but I am looking forward to this. I was afraid I had missed out on the retreat as I have been away from the computer for the last two weeks. My 86 year old father has been in the hospital and family members had to be with him 24/7. As I am the only one of 5 children who does not work, I stayed with him all week, the others sharing the duties on the weekend. He has improved to the point that he is now back in the nursing home. Anyhow, enough of that. I did take some handpiecing and crocheting with me and got quite a bit done. Still haven't used my ruler yet, but I am looking forward to this retreat and learning
about using it.
Mari - Texas - I am a Family
& Consumer Science teacher/Business Technology teacher. I find this
an interesting concept and would like to try it. I am not good at
completing projects but love starting them. I have not wanted to pack
up my supplies to attend a "real" retreat, so the virtual retreat
sounds like a good idea. I am anxious to see the instructions. I have
had the Wonder Cut Ruler for some time, but never completed a project
with it. I have been married for 40 years, have 2 married children and
5 grandchildren.
Kay - Waco
- Texas - My sister is Trice from New Braunfels, TX
and she introduced me to the WCR. I now have it and the book
(which she loaned me, then bought her another) and I am ready for the
retreat. I have had the quilting "gene" for several years and I
am so excited that my sister is excited about the art. I am a nurse and have been working in that
capacity for 30 yrs. I am married to a wonderful man that
supports my quilt addiction. I have 4 children and 9
grandchildren and another on the way. Lots of quilts to make.
Johnni - Santa Cruz - I am
cruzing along here in Sunny California, making rag quilts for
babies that have been adopted for Christmas by a local Church group. I
am going through my flannel stash and hoping to get several done before
Dec. 17. I am looking forward to participating in the Retreat since it
is hard for me to get away for the ones in Idaho!! I love reading all
the mail from you all. I don't enter in very often but it's nice to
know there are wonderful, caring people out there who also love to
quilt!
Time Frame
New instructions will be posted to the web site every Friday
morning. We realize that the holidays are fast approaching and
this time of year, things get a little hectic for everyone. Not
to fear. This will be a self-paced retreat. If you fall
behind, resist the temptation to go to the next step. I guess
what I'm saying is this will be kind of like a "Mystery Quilt" only
with lots of dialog.
